GRAND CANYON

...
While eaves dropping on a guided tour, we over heard the guide sum up the Grand Canyon perfectly when he said:

"I could ramble on for hours about facts and figures pertaining to the canyons. The depth, the rock layers, how many millions of years it took and so on. But let's face it folks, the Grand Canyon isn't about facts, it's about the overwhelming feeling you get when you see it for the first time."

No doubt, this is the straight truth. The Grand Canyon has countless awe striking figures, but it has even more awe striking views. No picture you'll ever see, nor any television program can possibly capture seeing nature's masterpiece first hand. It's a MUST SEE without a doubt.

Don't tell his Mom, but Frank just about wrecked the car when we drove onto the park and turned the corner. The first 60 seconds of looking out across the canyon will etch a permanent image of inspiration into the mind of the beholder.

But we'll try not to get to philosophical with you now. Here's the down and dirty as we saw it about the Grand Canyon National Park:

  - We toured the South Rim which is total tourism. In all reality, it wasn't bad. Some people complain about the number of people, but the fact that you're standing in front of the canyon seems to make people seem insignificant. It almost erases them completely.

  - The South Rim offers about 8-to-10 hiking trails ... but a major word of caution is, don't go light on the water. If you're brave enough to venture down the canyon, don't be stingy, bring at least 2 quarts per person. Remember, you're up 7,000 plus feet above sea level.

  - Camping was fun ... but cramped. Mather's Campground is the only real spot for pitching a tent. Make sure you reserve a spot AT LEAST 1 month in advance.
