Cape Cod is
simply a tradition in the Schenkelberg Family. My father has been going up to the Cape
practically every summer since we was a teenager with all 9 of his siblings. Its a
tradition that has filled our family with happy memories and nostalgia during the winter
hibernation. Life stands still at the Cape.
Now the extended family is just too big to possibly all stay together, so now siblings
stay in their respective houses with their own families. But, needless to say we all basically spend every
waking minute together anyway either at the beach, playing games, shopping in town or
whatever. It is just one happy reunion that no one would miss in eternity. Its the
pleasure of just being together. Every time I go back I fall more and more in love with
Chatham. Its definitely a part of who I am. The familiar smells of the hydrangea and
private bushes and the ocean sounds and views renews my soul.
This year one of the special outings was spent taking the train into Boston to see the
Boston Red Sox play at Fenway Park! We didnt get a chance to see them when we were
in Boston the last time so we HAD to come back :) What a cool park; its what old
school is all about. You feel as if you were transported back in the 20s munching on a hot
dog watching the Babe slug one over the Monster. Its what baseball is all about. Oh
man that Green Monster is scarier in person then on the TV screen. It brings such
character to the park.
Another
special outing was celebrating together Frank and Is engagement along with my sister,
Katherine, and her husband Richs sixth year anniversary. My parents took us out to a
lovely dinner at the Waqueset Inn. It was absolutely exquisite with a very romantic
setting. It is what fine dinning is all about: complimentarily cold melon soup and dessert
wine, herb butter, sugar water for your ice tea, your own French press when you order
coffee. Oh it was the best! The dinning room was just remodeled that looks out over the
bay. And to top it off, we had center stage for a full moon rising that night after a
breath taking sun set. My Dad claimed he planned the whole thing :)
Another highlight was going to a talk and book signing luncheon by the author, Linda
Greenlaw, who wrote the Hungary Ocean. She was the captain of the sister boat that went
under in the Perfect Storm. And, man is she an amazing woman! Not only was she the only
female captain/sword fisherman, but she was the best darn fisherman around. Surprisingly
shes a very petite and humble woman, but very vivacious and fun. My sisters and I
were very interested in if she got the chance to meet George Clooney and all about the man
who he played. For all you women out there that might be interested, she did meet George
and said that he was a very nice, sincere guy compared to Marky Mark, who was quite full
of himself.
One night the women decided to get together for a ladies
night. It was Cuban night! We made mojitos and ate pulled pork sandwiches while
we did each other's nails and watched girly flicks. For a recipe of the cool,
refreshing drink click on the mojito link. |
