Without a doubt, Austin will end up a top 10
city in many categories in our ranking statistics. The town where Dairy Queen originated
(and DQ became our favorite down south in sizzling Miami). We came to visit Angela
and Craig, good friends of ours from Washington. Ellen started her friendship with
Angela at her days working at the FDIC. She was always so friendly and outgoing that it
was easy to become friends. Angela has just
completed her first year of a doctorate program at UT, and Craig's company transferred him
to Texas where he started just this past week. They were wonderful tour guides, even
though it was a late night tour through the University of Texas campus and downtown
Austin. Angela and Craig amazed us further with their deep knowledge of Texas and
the capital city of Austin. You'd never know they had only been living there a few
months.
There are many interesting things to do in Austin. There
is a big bar/club scene in Austin. Although we didn't participate in any of these
festivities we took a driving tour through the center of it all. We've never seen so many
transvestites in all our lives strolling along bar hopping. They also took us to the
highest spot of Austin, a romantic spot to look over the city. It's best to visit at
night, but beware of car burglars and make sure to park your car in a well lit area. This
spot is claimed to be the highest point in all of Texas, although after camping in the
Guadeloupe Mountains, we realized what the highest peak really is.
Preceded by a perfectly prepared fajita dinner (complete
with tender Texas beef), and topped off with a post-tour chocolate pie dessert, our hosts
went above and beyond to bring us the true Texas charm. The next morning Angela also
prepared a glorious feast to send us on our way. It was just wonderful. We had
noticed already that Texans are genuinely courteous and interested people. Yes, they are
interestING as well, but they seemed to lend an ear a bit more than the rest of the
country and know how to make you feel right at home. |
